Bolzaneto<\/h3><\/div>
<\/p>\n

Launched in 1918, the Bolzaneto<\/em> was an Italian armed cargo steamship operated by Ilva of Genoa. Serving during a turbulent time in maritime history, her fate was sealed in June 1943<\/strong>, when she was struck by two torpedoes<\/strong> from a British submarine off the coast of Bonassola<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The attack claimed the lives of 10 crew members<\/strong>, including Commander Giuseppe Mazzei<\/strong>, and sent the ship to the seabed, where she remains to this day\u2014a haunting and fascinating site for experienced divers.<\/p>\n

    Dive Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    The Bolzaneto<\/em> now lies at -55 metres<\/strong>, broken into two main sections<\/strong>. The stern<\/strong> rests in the sand near the cargo holds, where divers can admire the large propeller<\/strong> and intact rudder blade<\/strong>\u2014both still clearly visible and remarkably preserved.<\/p>\n

    Mounted on the deck is a single-barrelled stern gun<\/strong>, surrounded by rudder control chains<\/strong>. This section allows for limited penetration: below the gun mount, divers can explore a small room containing ammunition<\/strong> and the remains of the on-board workshop<\/strong>, complete with scattered tools.<\/p>\n

    At the wreck\u2019s midpoint, the base of the funnel<\/strong> is still distinguishable, and on either side of the central structure are two smaller cargo holds<\/strong> that provide access to the engine room<\/strong>. From here, it\u2019s possible to glimpse additional spaces such as the kitchen<\/strong>, now silent and half-buried in silt.<\/p>\n

    As you move forward along the wreck, the bow section gradually disappears into the mud<\/strong>, shrouding much of it from view.<\/p>\n

    Marine Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    The wreck is a haven for marine biodiversity. Inside the holds and among the debris, you\u2019re likely to encounter conger eels<\/strong>, lobsters<\/strong>, and spiny lobsters<\/strong>, using the shadows of the wreck as shelter.<\/p>\n

    The exterior is adorned with jewel anemones<\/strong>, adding bursts of vivid colour around the gun and hull. Shoals of damselfish<\/strong> and silversides<\/strong> swirl in the water, attracting larger predators<\/strong> such as snapper<\/strong>, amberjack<\/strong>, and bonito<\/strong>\u2014making for a dramatic and lively dive.<\/p>\n
