At the time, she was considered one of the <strong data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"551\">most advanced and impressive fishing vessels in the world<\/strong>, designed for long-range missions with an autonomy of up to <strong data-start=\"612\" data-end=\"624\">140 days<\/strong>, and was frequently used for expeditions to Greenland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"681\" data-end=\"1075\">In 1942, during the Second World War, the vessel was confiscated by the <strong data-start=\"753\" data-end=\"769\">Kriegsmarine<\/strong> and converted into a submarine hunter. Integrated into the <strong data-start=\"829\" data-end=\"846\">22nd Flotilla<\/strong>, she was renamed <strong data-start=\"864\" data-end=\"875\">UJ 2210<\/strong> and would go on to serve a <strong data-start=\"903\" data-end=\"930\">notable military career<\/strong>\u2014including the sinking of the feared British submarine <strong data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"999\">HMS Tigris<\/strong>, which had severely impacted the Italian fleet near Capri in February 1943.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1366\">Her service came to an end in May 1944. After sustaining damage from previous bombings by the British submarine <strong data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1203\">HMS Sickle<\/strong>, she was finally sunk by <strong data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1240\">MTB 419<\/strong>, a British motor torpedo boat, on the night of <strong data-start=\"1288\" data-end=\"1303\">27 May 1944<\/strong>. The <strong data-start=\"1738\" data-end=\"1805\">bow section is broken but dramatically rises toward the surface<\/strong>, making it a <strong data-start=\"1819\" data-end=\"1866\">striking image for underwater photographers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1874\" data-end=\"1897\"><strong data-start=\"1878\" data-end=\"1897\">Dive Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1899\" data-end=\"2231\">Descending along the wreck, divers are greeted by <strong data-start=\"1949\" data-end=\"1970\">Hall-type anchors<\/strong>, still attached near the bow. At around <strong data-start=\"2011\" data-end=\"2024\">55 metres<\/strong>, where the ship broke apart, a <strong data-start=\"2056\" data-end=\"2076\">dramatic passage<\/strong> opens up. Here, you\u2019ll find a <strong data-start=\"2107\" data-end=\"2136\">single-barrelled deck gun<\/strong> still in place, along with a <strong data-start=\"2166\" data-end=\"2180\">shell rack<\/strong>\u2014a chilling reminder of the ship\u2019s wartime purpose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2233\" data-end=\"2353\">Nearby on the seabed, the <strong data-start=\"2259\" data-end=\"2278\">spare propeller<\/strong>, detached during salvage efforts, has been resting undisturbed since 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2355\" data-end=\"2595\">The <strong data-start=\"2359\" data-end=\"2378\">three aft decks<\/strong> remain accessible, with <strong data-start=\"2403\" data-end=\"2419\">open hatches<\/strong> offering external inspection, though entry into the <strong data-start=\"2472\" data-end=\"2503\">helm station is not advised<\/strong> due to its cramped layout and the unusual tilt of the hull, which can cause disorientation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2597\" data-end=\"2801\">Toward the stern, you\u2019ll reach the <strong data-start=\"2632\" data-end=\"2642\">funnel<\/strong>, which once supported a <strong data-start=\"2667\" data-end=\"2697\">turret-mounted machine gun<\/strong>.
