JORN \u2013 Bettolina<\/h3><\/div>
<\/p>\n

This small Dutch motor vessel, originally launched under the name Gretha<\/em>, later became known as Jorn<\/em> after joining the First German Transport Flotilla<\/strong> in November 1943.<\/p>\n

On 12 February 1944<\/strong>, she met her end off the Bay of Silence in Sestri Levante<\/strong>, struck by fire from a British P-47 D Thunderbolt<\/strong> during a World War II air raid. Today, her well-preserved wreck offers an evocative window into wartime history and a dive rich in marine life.<\/p>\n

    Dive Highlights<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    The descent line brings you down to midship<\/strong>, where the wreck sits upright in navigation position<\/strong> at a depth of around 30 metres<\/strong>. Between the two cargo holds lies a small raised platform, once home to an anti-aircraft machine gun<\/strong>\u2014now only ammunition remnants<\/strong> remain as evidence of her armament.<\/p>\n

    The bow<\/strong> is remarkably intact, though a large breach on the port side<\/strong> marks the impact that ultimately led to her sinking.<\/p>\n

    Moving aft, the engine room<\/strong> and galley<\/strong> still contain original tools and kitchen utensils<\/strong>, making this a particularly immersive wreck for history enthusiasts. On the starboard stern<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find a river-style anchor<\/strong>, while the propeller and rudder<\/strong> are clearly visible, lying neatly on the muddy seabed.<\/p>\n

    Marine Life & Photography<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    The wreck is not only a historical gem but also a vibrant habitat for marine life. The aft ladder<\/strong> glows with clusters of jewel anemones (Corynactis viridis)<\/strong>, and the bow hosts elegant spirographs<\/strong>, swaying in the current.<\/p>\n

    Within the nooks and crannies of the wreck, divers frequently encounter conger eels<\/strong>, moray eels<\/strong>, octopuses<\/strong>, spiny lobsters<\/strong>, and lobsters<\/strong>. For macro lovers, there\u2019s no shortage of anemones and colourful nudibranchs<\/strong>. Pelagic visitors like amberjack<\/strong> and snapper<\/strong> often sweep in from the blue, hunting schools of anchovies<\/strong> and damselfish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
