Carega Shoal<\/h3><\/div>
<\/p>\n

One of the most fascinating dive sites in the Portofino Marine Protected Area<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Carega Shoal is one of the most iconic and exciting dive sites in the Portofino Marine Protected Area<\/strong>, loved by divers for its spectacular topography and the near-constant presence of large schools of barracuda<\/strong>. The top of the shoal lies just 5 metres below the surface, while a canyon<\/strong> at 16 metres separates it from the promontory.<\/p>\n

The most vibrant marine life can be found between 10 and 20 metres, where, especially in the presence of current, the area bursts to life with dentex, amberjack, barracuda, damselfish, and sea bream<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The dive unfolds around the shoal<\/strong> itself, which drops off to over 50 metres<\/strong> on the seaward side, offering dramatic walls and deep crevices where lobsters, crayfish, octopuses, and conger eels<\/strong> find shelter. Below 30 metres, you\u2019ll find vivid red coral<\/strong> and elegant gorgonians<\/strong>. And all around, barracuda glide up and down the wall, while clouds of damselfish draw in predators from the open blue\u2014a mesmerising underwater show<\/strong> you\u2019ll never forget.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udd34 RED ROUTE (down to -40 m)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

DESCENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

    After our pre-dive check, we\u2019ll descend near the buoy, from which we can already glimpse the outline of the shoal to the EAST of our position. The anchor block lies at -25 m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    CIRCLING THE SHOAL<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    • \n

      With the wall on our left, swimming anti-clockwise, we\u2019ll reach the maximum depth of -40 m<\/strong> on the deepest side, facing the open sea.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      During the descent, it\u2019s common to see groups of barracuda<\/strong> circling below.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      At -30 m<\/strong>, we\u2019ll begin to see the first red gorgonians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Over the years, there have been several sightings of large tuna<\/strong> here\u2014especially in September when anchovies and sand smelts arrive.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      We\u2019ll begin to ascend to around -25 m<\/strong> while continuing to follow the contours of the shoal.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      When we see large boulders appear, we\u2019ll know we\u2019re approaching the canyon at -16 m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      Everywhere you look, large brown groupers<\/strong> swim in and out of their dens, slowly and calmly, allowing divers to approach within just a few metres.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      After crossing the canyon, we\u2019ll reach -10 m<\/strong> at the top of the shoal, where the abundance of fish is simply breathtaking.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      ASCENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

        After a 3-minute safety stop at -5 m<\/strong> on the top of the shoal, we\u2019ll easily reach the boat by finning in a south-westerly direction.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        \ud83d\udfe2 GREEN ROUTE (down to -18 m)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

            After crossing the canyon, we\u2019ll ascend to -10 m<\/strong> at the top of the shoal, where the density of marine life is overwhelming<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
