The mooring block sits right at the centre of the shoal at a depth of -16 m, surrounded by an ecosystem teeming with life. Every crevice hosts its own surprises: moray eels, lobsters, conger eels, octopuses, large scorpionfish, while dentex and brown groupers patrol the area like sentinels in search of prey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"1167\">As we descend deeper, vibrant <strong data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"822\">red gorgonians<\/strong> dominate the scenery, swaying gently with the current. Among their branches, you might spot <strong data-start=\"915\" data-end=\"932\">catshark eggs<\/strong>, perfectly nestled in the protection of the coral. The shoal\u2019s strategic location also makes it a prime spot for encounters with larger <strong data-start=\"1069\" data-end=\"1082\">predators<\/strong>\u2014amberjacks and dentex are regularly seen chasing schools of anchovies or damselfish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1169\" data-end=\"1299\">Undoubtedly, Isuela is one of the most fascinating dives in the Portofino area for its variety, abundance, and spectacular colour.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1306\" data-end=\"1342\">\ud83d\udd34 <strong data-start=\"1313\" data-end=\"1342\">RED ROUTE (down to -40 m)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"3103\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1344\" data-end=\"1525\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1346\" data-end=\"1525\">After our pre-dive check, we\u2019ll descend along the chain to the mooring block at around -16 m, where we\u2019re often greeted by a swirling <strong data-start=\"1480\" data-end=\"1503\">school of barracuda<\/strong> circling the chain.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1656\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1528\" data-end=\"1656\">The dive begins heading <strong data-start=\"1552\" data-end=\"1561\">south<\/strong>, gradually descending along the contours of the shoal to reach the maximum depth of <strong data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1655\">-40 m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1658\" data-end=\"1894\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1660\" data-end=\"1894\">Keeping the wall on our <strong data-start=\"1684\" data-end=\"1693\">right<\/strong>, we\u2019ll move in a clockwise direction. Along the way, <strong data-start=\"1747\" data-end=\"1769\">red gorgonian fans<\/strong> sway in the gentle current from the west, and if you look closely, you\u2019ll often spot <strong data-start=\"1855\" data-end=\"1872\">catshark eggs<\/strong> suspended among them.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1896\" data-end=\"2001\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1898\" data-end=\"2001\">Numerous crevices, richly decorated with red coral, shelter <strong data-start=\"1958\" data-end=\"1998\">forkbeards, lobsters, and moray eels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2166\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2004\" data-end=\"2166\">As we continue, we\u2019ll pass a large crack filled with <strong data-start=\"2057\" data-end=\"2113\">coral, yellow sea daisies (<em data-start=\"2086\" data-end=\"2110\">Parazoanthus axinellae<\/em>)<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2119\" data-end=\"2163\">Leptopsammia pruvoti (yellow cup corals)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2167\" data-end=\"2263\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2169\" data-end=\"2263\">Just beyond, another deep fissure opens up, where <strong data-start=\"2219\" data-end=\"2239\">lobster antennae<\/strong> can be seen poking out.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2475\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2267\" data-end=\"2475\">From this point, the wall changes shape, becoming smoother as we ascend to around -25 m. It\u2019s worth looking out into the <strong data-start=\"2388\" data-end=\"2396\">blue<\/strong>, where <strong data-start=\"2404\" data-end=\"2446\">tuna, amberjack, barracuda, and dentex<\/strong> often appear out of nowhere.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2477\" data-end=\"2637\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2479\" data-end=\"2637\">We\u2019ll continue ascending to -18 m, reaching the edge of the shoal\u2019s cap, where <strong data-start=\"2558\" data-end=\"2587\">brown groupers and dentex<\/strong> are frequently spotted swimming through the area.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2639\" data-end=\"2756\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2641\" data-end=\"2756\">The many crevices here are home to large numbers of <strong data-start=\"2693\" data-end=\"2707\">moray eels<\/strong>, which often peer out curiously from their dens.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2758\" data-end=\"2851\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2760\" data-end=\"2851\">We\u2019ll begin our final ascent beside the chain, making a <strong data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"2848\">3-minute safety stop at -5 m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2852\" data-end=\"2952\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2854\" data-end=\"2952\">It\u2019s essential to maintain visual contact with the chain throughout both the descent and ascent.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2953\" data-end=\"3103\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2955\" data-end=\"3103\"><strong data-start=\"2955\" data-end=\"3020\">This site is not recommended when strong currents are present<\/strong>, and divers should always maintain visual reference with the wall during the dive.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"3110\" data-end=\"3147\">\ud83d\udd35 <strong data-start=\"3117\" data-end=\"3147\">BLUE ROUTE (down to -50 m)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul data-start=\"3149\" data-end=\"4414\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3149\" data-end=\"3290\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3151\" data-end=\"3290\">We\u2019ll follow the same route as the Red Route down to -40 m, continuing until we reach <strong data-start=\"3237\" data-end=\"3289\">large boulders covered in magnificent gorgonians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3292\" data-end=\"3482\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3294\" data-end=\"3482\">If visibility is good, we can venture westward and reach <strong data-start=\"3351\" data-end=\"3363\">Isuelina<\/strong>, a small satellite shoal with a top at -33 m, descending to depths of <strong data-start=\"3434\" data-end=\"3449\">up to -50 m<\/strong> (for <strong data-start=\"3455\" data-end=\"3475\">technical divers<\/strong> only).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3484\" data-end=\"3615\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3486\" data-end=\"3615\">After exploring its colourful gorgonian-covered slopes and watching <strong data-start=\"3554\" data-end=\"3582\">clouds of red damselfish<\/strong>, we\u2019ll return to the main shoal.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3617\" data-end=\"3737\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3619\" data-end=\"3737\">Along the way, we\u2019ll pass countless coral-filled crevices that shelter <strong data-start=\"3690\" data-end=\"3734\">forkbeards, moray eels, and scorpionfish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3738\" data-end=\"3796\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3740\" data-end=\"3796\">By this point, we\u2019ll have ascended back to around -25 m.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3798\" data-end=\"3916\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3800\" data-end=\"3916\">In the open water, <strong data-start=\"3819\" data-end=\"3862\">dentex hunt among schools of damselfish<\/strong>, while <strong data-start=\"3870\" data-end=\"3894\">large brown groupers<\/strong> swim calmly nearby.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3917\" data-end=\"4000\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3919\" data-end=\"4000\">Moray eels remain a constant presence here, appearing from every nook and cranny.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4002\" data-end=\"4178\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4004\" data-end=\"4178\">Finning <strong data-start=\"4012\" data-end=\"4030\">anti-clockwise<\/strong> around the shoal cap, we\u2019ll reach a large boulder on the <strong data-start=\"4088\" data-end=\"4113\">western side at -14 m<\/strong>, loop around it, and begin our final ascent alongside the chain.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4180\" data-end=\"4252\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4182\" data-end=\"4252\">At -5 m, we\u2019ll complete our <strong data-start=\"4210\" data-end=\"4234\">3-minute safety stop<\/strong> before surfacing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4254\" data-end=\"4414\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4256\" data-end=\"4414\"><strong data-start=\"4256\" data-end=\"4340\">As with the Red Route, this dive is not recommended in strong current conditions<\/strong>, and divers should always keep visual contact with the wall of the shoal.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong data-start=\"158\"
