OBJECTIVES

This program has been developed to train divers to safely conduct wreck dives and to develop awareness and the attitude for personal responsibility and proper risk management. The program can be conducted with nitrox and trimix mixtures, depending on the prerequisite certifications held by the diver.

PREREQUISITES

  • IANTD Advanced EANx Diver certification or an equivalent certification from another recognized agency

  • IANTD Wreck Diver certification or an equivalent certification from another recognized agency

  • Highly recommended to have IANTD Normoxic Trimix Diver certification or an equivalent certification from another recognized agency

  • Minimum of 100 dives logged in the personal dive logbook (log book)

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • Medical certificate for non-competitive fitness with no contraindications to scuba diving

  • Logbook with at least 100 recorded dives

  • Photocopies of all previous certifications, if the diver is not already certified as IANTD Advanced EANx Diver and IANTD Wreck Diver

PROGRAM AND DURATION

  • Review of the history of wreck diving

  • Equipment configuration

  • Psychology and attitude

  • Information on the structure and nomenclature of ships

  • Gas consumption and gas management

  • Study of safety and organization of penetrative wreck dives

  • Dry run of safety management and emergency procedures

  • One confined water training session in an unobstructed environment at a maximum depth of 10m

  • Open water training with at least 4 wreck dives to a maximum depth of 42m (51m if the divers are also certified as IANTD Normoxic Trimix Diver)

  • Training penetration in areas without light, but with external light visible and access to the exit without obstructions or narrow passages

TEACHING MATERIAL

  • IANTD Wreck Diver Manual and other texts deemed useful for training

EQUIPMENT

  • Double tank setup with central manifold or Sidemount system with two tanks

  • Hard backplate with a single harness and D-ring, and a bag without elastic bands, appropriately sized for the tanks used

  • A balanced regulator with DIN attachment and a 1.80/2.10 m hose

  • A balanced regulator with DIN attachment and a 60/70 cm hose

  • Manometer with a 50/60 cm hose attached to the 60/70 cm regulator hose

  • BP hose for BCD attached to the regulator with a 60/70 cm hose

  • Primary reel with around 100m of line (120m recommended depending on emergency type)

  • A spool with a minimum of 27m of line (43m recommended depending on penetration type)

  • A lift and signaling balloon with at least 12kg of buoyancy

  • A cutting tool (recommended: knife with line cutter)

  • Whiteboard and pencil (recommended: Wet Notes)

  • Depth gauge and watch/timer

  • Two torches, one primary and one backup
